Why This Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie is a Must-Try for Healthy Eaters

This Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie isn’t just a delicious meal; it’s a smart and strategic choice for anyone looking to enjoy nutritious comfort food without compromise. Here’s why this recipe truly stands out and has become a staple in many kitchens:

  • A Clever Way to Boost Your Veggie Intake Naturally: Incorporating creamy butternut squash into the topping is a brilliant and delicious strategy to “sneak” more wholesome vegetables into your diet without anyone suspecting! Butternut squash is a nutritional powerhouse, an excellent source of Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), which is vital for maintaining healthy vision, supporting a robust immune system, and promoting radiant skin. It also provides a significant amount of Vitamin C, dietary fiber for digestive health, and various antioxidants that combat free radicals. The natural sweetness from the squash perfectly complements the savory meat filling, creating a beautifully balanced and unexpectedly delightful taste experience that even picky eaters will enjoy. For another delicious way to enjoy this versatile winter squash, consider trying a scalloped butternut squash gratin.
  • Perfectly Aligned with Specific Dietary Needs: If you’re navigating dietary restrictions or simply aiming for cleaner eating, this recipe is an absolute godsend. It’s naturally Dairy-free and Gluten-free, making it a safe and delicious option for those with lactose intolerance, dairy allergies, or celiac disease. Furthermore, it’s meticulously crafted to adhere strictly to Paleo and Whole30 guidelines, meaning it’s completely free from grains, legumes, processed sugars, and unhealthy oils. This comprehensive compliance makes it an ideal choice for sustained clean eating, helping you achieve your health and wellness goals without ever feeling deprived of your favorite comforting flavors.
  • Excellent for Efficient Meal Prep & Effortless Entertaining: This hearty shepherd’s pie is incredibly convenient and versatile, making it ideal for both bustling weeknight family dinners and more elaborate gatherings. The recipe yields generous portions, typically serving 8, which makes it perfect for feeding a crowd or for simplifying your weekly meal planning. It also reheats beautifully, meaning you can enjoy delicious, wholesome leftovers for several days, significantly easing your cooking burden throughout the week. In fact, many find that the robust flavors often deepen and improve overnight, making it even more enjoyable the next day.
  • Packed with Lean, High-Quality Protein: The strategic combination of lean ground beef and ground turkey provides a substantial amount of high-quality protein in every serving. Protein is essential for numerous bodily functions, including muscle building, tissue repair, and maintaining overall satiety, which helps in weight management. Using a mix of these two lean meats not only balances the fat content but also contributes to a more complex and rich flavor profile that is both deeply satisfying and lighter than a pure beef pie. This protein-rich meal will keep you feeling full, energized, and ready to tackle your day, making it a fantastic choice for an active and health-conscious lifestyle.
  • A Comfort Food Classic, Thoughtfully Elevated: This isn’t just another meal; it’s a warm, comforting hug in a casserole dish. The harmonious blend of warm, earthy spices, the tender, savory meat filling, and the luxuriously creamy topping come together to create a dish that is deeply comforting and profoundly satisfying, especially on a crisp autumn or cold winter evening. The roasted butternut squash adds a sophisticated, slightly sweet twist to the traditional potato mash, offering a unique texture and a touch of rustic elegance to this beloved family favorite. It’s the kind of dish that brings people together and creates lasting memories around the dinner table.

Gather your fresh ingredients for a perfectly balanced and incredibly flavorful Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie.
  • Butternut Squash: The unequivocal star of our topping, this vibrant orange squash adds a delightful natural sweetness, a creamy texture, and a beautiful golden color. Choose one that feels firm and heavy for its size, with smooth, unblemished skin.
  • Gold Potatoes: These potatoes are highly recommended for their naturally buttery flavor and exceptionally creamy texture when mashed, providing the perfect smooth base for our unique butternut squash topping.
  • Thyme & Sage: These aromatic herbs are foundational for both the subtly spiced squash topping and the deeply savory meat gravy. They lend a warm, earthy, and classically comforting flavor profile that defines shepherd’s pie.
  • Coconut Cream: Absolutely essential for achieving that rich, luxurious, and dairy-free creaminess in the mashed topping. Make sure to use full-fat coconut cream from a can, ideally one without added preservatives (brands like Savoy are excellent choices).
  • Carrots: Finely diced carrots contribute a subtle sweetness, a pop of color, and valuable essential nutrients to the savory meat filling, enhancing its overall depth.
  • Ground Beef: Lean ground beef forms the hearty, robust base of our savory gravy, providing a deep umami flavor and a significant protein boost that makes the dish so satisfying.
  • Ground Turkey: A lighter yet equally flavorful protein choice that wonderfully complements the ground beef. This blend ensures the filling is rich and robust without being overly heavy, balancing the fat content.
  • Garlic & Onion: These classic foundational aromatics are critical for building the complex, savory flavor base of the meat gravy. Using freshly diced garlic and onion will yield the best and most fragrant results.
  • Coconut Flour: Used sparingly as a gluten-free and grain-free thickening agent for the gravy, ensuring it achieves a perfect, velvety consistency that clings beautifully to the meat.
  • Tomato Paste: This concentrated ingredient adds a burst of deep umami flavor and a hint of bright acidity to the meat filling, enriching its complexity and savory notes significantly.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: A small splash of apple cider vinegar works wonders, brightening the overall flavors in the gravy and introducing a subtle, pleasant tang that cuts through the richness.
  • Chili Powder: Contributes a mild, earthy warmth and a complex blend of spice notes to the savory meat filling, adding another layer of flavor without making the dish overtly spicy.
  • Chopped Tomatoes: These provide a fresh, slightly acidic component to the gravy, adding crucial moisture and a pleasing chunky texture (Pomi is a highly recommended brand for its consistently high quality and fresh taste).
  • Chicken Stock: The primary liquid base for our rich and flavorful gravy, helping to meld all the savory ingredients together. Always opt for a good quality, unsalted chicken stock or bone broth to control the overall seasoning and maximize flavor.

Versatile Additions & Simple Substitutions for Customizing Your Shepherd’s Pie

One of the many beauties of this Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie recipe is its incredible flexibility. It’s designed to be adaptable, allowing you to easily customize it based on your dietary needs, personal preferences, or simply what ingredients you happen to have readily available in your pantry. Feel empowered to make this dish uniquely yours:

  • Flexible Meat Choices: While the combination of ground beef and ground turkey offers a perfectly balanced and rich flavor, you can certainly simplify the protein. You can easily use just ground turkey for a significantly leaner option, or opt for just ground beef if you prefer a more traditional, robust, and richer flavor profile. If using only one type of meat, ensure you adjust any fat rendering steps accordingly. For an even more classic shepherd’s pie essence with our unique twist, consider experimenting with ground lamb. Alternatively, ground bison can provide a lean, slightly gamey, and nutrient-dense alternative.
  • Creamy Topping Alternatives for Dairy-Free Needs: If high-fat coconut cream isn’t available in your local store or you simply prefer other options, you have several excellent dairy-free alternatives. Full-fat canned coconut milk can be a suitable substitute; just be sure to use the thick, creamy portion that separates and rises to the top of the can for the best texture. Alternatively, unsweetened almond milk can provide a good liquid component to help mash the squash and potatoes, but be mindful of the consistency and add it gradually until you achieve your desired level of creaminess without making the mash too runny.
  • Gluten-Free Thickening Agents: For effectively thickening the savory gravy, if coconut flour is not accessible or preferred, both tapioca flour (also commonly known as tapioca starch) or arrowroot flour (or arrowroot starch) are excellent grain-free and gluten-free alternatives. These natural starches offer similar thickening properties and are perfectly suitable for both Paleo and Whole30 diets. Start with the same recommended amount and adjust slightly if needed, as their individual thickening power can vary marginally.
  • Broth Varieties for Enhanced Flavor: To further deepen and enrich the flavor of your meat gravy, feel free to substitute the chicken stock. Bone broth is a fantastic option that provides an extra boost of beneficial nutrients and a profound depth of savory flavor. Beef broth is another superb choice that will particularly complement the ground beef, enhancing the overall umami notes of the filling and creating a truly robust gravy. Whenever possible, opt for low-sodium varieties to allow you complete control over the final seasoning of your dish.
  • Adding More Vegetables to the Filling: To significantly boost the vegetable content and nutritional value, consider incorporating additional finely diced vegetables into the meat mixture during the sautéing stage. Great options include mushrooms, bell peppers (any color), or even a handful of frozen peas (note: peas are not Whole30 compliant, so omit if strictly adhering to that protocol) or cut green beans. These additions will introduce more texture, diverse flavors, and an extra layer of health benefits to your already wholesome meal.
  • Experimenting with Herb Variations: While thyme and sage are classic and perfect pairings for this dish, don’t hesitate to experiment with other aromatic herbs. Fresh or dried rosemary, a bay leaf added during the simmering of the gravy (and removed before baking), or a touch of marjoram can all offer a different yet equally delightful aromatic profile to the meat filling.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Craft Your Perfect Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie

Creating this delicious and healthy Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie is a straightforward and enjoyable process when broken down into clear, manageable steps. Follow these detailed instructions carefully to ensure a truly satisfying and flavorful meal that will impress everyone at your table:

Part 1: Preparing the Creamy Butternut Squash & Potato Topping

  1. Roast the Butternut Squash to Perfection: Begin by preheating your oven to a robust 400°F (200°C). Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil for effortless cleanup. Carefully halve the butternut squash lengthwise, then use a spoon to scoop out all the seeds and any stringy bits. Drizzle the cut sides of the squash generously with about ½ tablespoon of olive oil, ensuring even coverage. Now, season the squash flesh with a hearty pinch of salt, freshly ground black pepper, dried thyme, and rubbed sage. Take a moment to gently rub these aromatic spices into the squash. Place the squash, cut-side down, onto the prepared baking sheet. Roast in the preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes, or until the flesh is incredibly soft and can be easily pierced with a fork or the tip of a knife. Once perfectly tender, remove from the oven and set it aside to cool slightly, making it easier to handle.
  2. Boil the Potatoes Until Tender: While the butternut squash is roasting, begin preparing your potatoes. Peel and slice about 3 pounds of gold potatoes into uniform 1-inch thick pieces. This consistent sizing ensures they cook evenly. Place the potato slices into a large pot and cover them completely with cold water, adding a generous pinch of salt to season them from the start. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and allow the potatoes to simmer gently until they are fork-tender, which typically takes between 20-25 minutes. Once cooked, thoroughly drain the potatoes and transfer them to a large mixing bowl, ready for mashing.
  3. Mash and Combine the Delicious Topping: Using a sturdy potato masher, begin mashing the boiled potatoes. Add ¼ cup of full-fat coconut cream (remember to use the thick cream from the top of the can), 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of onion powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper to the potatoes. Continue mashing until the mixture is beautifully smooth and creamy. Once the roasted butternut squash has cooled enough to comfortably handle, carefully scoop out its soft, tender flesh and add it directly to the bowl with the mashed potatoes. Mash everything together vigorously until the squash and potatoes are seamlessly combined, resulting in a uniformly smooth, fluffy, and vibrant golden topping. Taste the mixture and adjust seasonings if necessary, ensuring it’s perfectly balanced. Set this delectable topping aside while you prepare the filling.

Part 2: Crafting the Savory Meat Filling (Gravy)

  1. Sauté Aromatics and Carrots: In a large, deep pot or a spacious Dutch oven, heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add 2 cups of uniformly sliced carrots (this typically equates to about 3-4 medium carrots) to the pot. Sauté the carrots, stirring occasionally, until they begin to tenderize and soften, which usually takes about 4-5 minutes. Next, add 1 cup of finely diced onions and 3 cloves of freshly minced garlic to the pot. Continue to sauté for another 1-2 minutes until the onions become translucent and the garlic is wonderfully fragrant, being very careful not to let the garlic burn.
  2. Brown the Meats with Spices: Reduce the heat to a steady medium. Add 1 pound of lean ground beef and 1 pound of lean ground turkey to the pot with the sautéed vegetables. Use a sturdy wooden spoon or spatula to effectively break up the meat into smaller, uniform pieces as it cooks. Season the meat generously with ¾ teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of dried thyme. Continue to cook and stir until both the ground beef and ground turkey are thoroughly browned, and no pink remains, which typically takes around 5-7 minutes. If you notice an excessive amount of fat, feel free to drain off any excess, though with lean meats, this step is often optional.
  3. Build the Rich Gravy Flavor Base: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of coconut flour evenly over the browned meat and vegetable mixture. Stir vigorously to ensure all the ingredients are well coated, allowing the flour to cook for about one minute. This step is crucial for effectively thickening the gravy later on. Next, stir in 4 tablespoons of rich tomato paste (Cento is an excellent Paleo-friendly option), 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1 teaspoon of chili powder. Mix everything together thoroughly, ensuring all the spices and pastes are fully incorporated into the meat mixture, creating a vibrant and aromatic foundation.
  4. Simmer the Gravy to Perfection: Pour in 1½ cups of chopped tomatoes (Pomi is a fantastic brand known for its quality and fresh taste) and 1½ cups of chicken stock or bone broth. Bring the entire mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook, uncovered, for approximately 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally during this time, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken into a rich, luscious, and savory gravy. The desired consistency should be hearty enough to hold its shape but still deliciously saucy, coating all the meat and vegetables beautifully.

Part 3: Assembling and Baking Your Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Assemble the Pie Layers: Carefully pour the prepared shepherd’s pie meat filling into a large baking dish (a 9×13-inch pan is typically perfect for this recipe). Spread the filling evenly across the entire bottom of the dish, creating a solid and flavorful base. Now, take your creamy, golden butternut squash and potato mash topping and gently dollop it over the meat layer. Using a spatula or the back of a large spoon, carefully spread the mash evenly to completely cover the entire meat filling. For an extra touch of visual appeal, you can create decorative swirls or peaks with your spatula on the topping.
  2. Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the assembled pie into your preheated 400°F (200°C) oven. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the topping achieves a beautiful golden-brown color and the savory filling underneath is visibly bubbling around the edges. This indicates that the pie is thoroughly heated through and all the wonderful flavors have melded together perfectly. If you desire a darker golden crust, you can briefly place it under the broiler for a minute or two, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  3. Rest and Serve: Once baked, carefully remove the butternut squash shepherd’s pie from the oven. Allow it to rest undisturbed for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. This crucial resting period allows the filling to set slightly, which makes it much easier to serve clean, cohesive slices and ensures that all the wonderful, complex flavors have a moment to fully develop and integrate. Serve warm and savor every wholesome bite of your homemade comfort food masterpiece!

Expert Tips for Crafting the Best Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie

Achieving a perfect Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie is simple with these additional tips and tricks:

  • Avoid Over-Mashing the Topping: For a light, airy, and fluffy topping, be careful not to over-mash the potatoes and squash mixture. Mash just until it’s smooth and creamy; overworking it can release too much starch, leading to a gummy or pasty texture.
  • Season Generously and Taste as You Go: Flavor is key! Remember to taste and adjust the seasonings for both the butternut squash and potato topping and the meat filling throughout the cooking process. Keep in mind that some flavors can mellow slightly during baking, so a slightly bolder seasoning initially can be beneficial.
  • Achieve a Beautiful Golden Crust: If your topping isn’t browning as much as you’d prefer in the last few minutes of baking, you can briefly switch your oven to a low broil setting. Watch it very closely and continuously to prevent burning, just until you achieve that perfect, appealing golden-brown finish.
  • Gentle and Even Spreading: When it comes to spreading the mashed topping over the meat filling, use a gentle hand. The goal is to create an even layer without disturbing the rich meat mixture underneath, ensuring distinct and appealing layers.
  • The Importance of Quality Ingredients: For truly exceptional flavor, the quality of your ingredients matters significantly. This is especially true for items like chicken stock (or bone broth) and chopped tomatoes. Opting for high-quality brands can profoundly enhance the overall depth and deliciousness of your shepherd’s pie.
  • Pre-Roast Butternut Squash Properly: Ensure the squash is roasted until very soft. This guarantees easy mashing and a smoother, creamier topping. If it’s too firm, your mash will be lumpy.
  • Control Gravy Consistency: The gravy should be thick enough to hold its shape but still saucy. If it’s too thin, simmer a bit longer; if too thick, add a splash more broth.

Absolutely! This Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie is an excellent candidate for advance preparation, making it perfect for meal prepping or entertaining. You can effortlessly follow all the steps outlined in the recipe up to the baking portion. Once assembled in your baking dish, cover it tightly (with plastic wrap and then foil) and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to bake, it’s beneficial to allow the pie to come closer to room temperature for about 30 minutes before placing it in the oven. While this hearty shepherd’s pie is undoubtedly a complete and satisfying meal on its own, it pairs wonderfully with light, fresh, and vibrant side dishes that complement its richness. I particularly love serving it alongside a crisp green side salad tossed with a light vinaigrette; the acidity helps to cut through the richness of the pie. Roasted seasonal vegetables like tender asparagus spears, crisp green beans, or perfectly roasted broccoli florets are also fantastic complements, adding more texture, color, and essential nutrients to your plate, creating a perfectly balanced meal.

Can I freeze Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie for later?

Yes, this delicious pie freezes beautifully, making it an ideal option for future meals! You have the flexibility to freeze it either before or after baking.

To freeze unbaked: Assemble the entire pie in a freezer-safe baking dish (disposable aluminum pans work exceptionally well for this purpose). Cover the dish very tightly with a layer of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Label and freeze for up to 3 months. To bake, thaw the pie overnight in the refrigerator, then bake as directed in the instructions, potentially adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time to ensure it’s heated through.

To freeze baked: Allow the baked pie to cool completely to room temperature. You can either cut it into individual portions or wrap the whole pie tightly (plastic wrap then foil). Freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat thawed portions, warm them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until heated through, or use a microwave for quicker reheating.

How do I reheat leftover Butternut Squash Shepherd’s Pie effectively?

You can also quickly reheat individual servings in the microwave for 2-4 minutes, stirring halfway, until piping hot. If reheating a larger portion in the original baking dish, cover it with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-45 minutes, or until the center is hot.

  • ½ Tbs olive oil, for roasting the squash.
  • ½ tsp salt, plus an extra pinch for seasoning the squash.
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper, plus an extra pinch for seasoning the squash.
  • ½ tsp dried thyme, plus an extra pinch for seasoning the squash.
  • ½ tsp rubbed sage, plus an extra pinch for seasoning the squash.
  • 3 lbs gold potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1-inch thick pieces for even cooking.
  • ¼ cup full-fat coconut cream, from a can (Savoy is highly recommended for purity).
  • 1 tsp garlic powder.
  • ½ tsp onion powder.

For the Savory Meat Filling:

  • 2 tsp olive oil, for sautéing vegetables.
  • 2 cups sliced carrots, roughly 3-4 medium carrots.
  • 1 large onion, diced (approximately 1 cup).
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced.
  • 1 lb lean ground beef.
  • 1 lb lean ground turkey.
  • ¾ tsp black pepper.
  • 1 tsp salt.
  • 1 tsp dried thyme.
  • 1 Tbs coconut flour, for thickening the gravy.
  • 4 Tbs tomato paste (Cento brand is Paleo-compliant).
  • 1 Tbs apple cider vinegar.
  • 1 tsp onion powder.
  • 1 tsp chili powder.
  • 1½ cups chopped tomatoes (Pomi is a favorite for quality).
  • 1½ cups chicken stock or bone broth, for a rich gravy base.

Instructions

Part 1: Preparing the Mashed Topping

  1. Roast the Butternut Squash: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Halve the butternut squash, scoop out the seeds, and brush the cut sides with ½ Tbs olive oil. Season generously with a pinch of salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and rubbed sage. Place cut-side down on the baking sheet and roast for 45 minutes, or until the squash is very tender when pierced with a knife. Remove and let cool slightly.
  2. Boil the Potatoes: While the squash roasts, peel and slice 3 lbs of gold potatoes into 1-inch thick pieces. Place them in a large pot, cover with cold, salted water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain well.
  3. Mash the Topping: Transfer the drained potatoes to a large bowl. Add ¼ cup coconut cream, 1 tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp ground black pepper. Mash until smooth. Once the roasted squash is cool enough to handle, scoop its flesh into the bowl with the potatoes. Mash everything together until well combined and fluffy. Taste and adjust seasonings. Set aside.

Part 2: Making the Savory Meat Filling

  1. Sauté Vegetables: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 tsp olive oil over medium-high heat. Add 2 cups sliced carrots and sauté for 4-5 minutes until tender. Stir in 1 diced onion and 3 minced garlic cloves; cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Brown the Meats: Reduce heat to medium. Add 1 lb ground beef and 1 lb ground turkey to the pot. Break up the meat with a spoon and season with ¾ tsp black pepper, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp dried thyme. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring, until the meat is thoroughly browned. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  3. Build Gravy Flavor: Sprinkle 1 Tbs coconut flour over the meat mixture and stir for 1 minute. Add 4 Tbs tomato paste, 1 Tbs apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp onion powder, and 1 tsp chili powder. Mix well to incorporate.
  4. Simmer to Gravy: Pour in 1½ cups chopped tomatoes and 1½ cups chicken stock or bone broth. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat and cook, uncovered, for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens into a rich gravy.

Part 3: Assembling and Baking

  1. Assemble the Pie: Transfer the savory meat filling to a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly. Gently spoon the mashed butternut squash and potato topping over the meat, spreading it carefully with a spatula to cover completely.
  2. Bake: Bake the assembled pie in the preheated 400°F (200°C) oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  3. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the pie to set for easier serving. Enjoy your wholesome comfort food!

Notes & Tips:

  • Meat Variations: For the filling, you have the flexibility to use just ground turkey for a leaner option or just ground beef if that’s your preference. Both work wonderfully and create a hearty foundation for the pie. Consider ground lamb for a more traditional shepherd’s pie flavor with a twist.
  • Dairy-Free Cream Alternatives: If coconut cream is not readily available, full-fat canned coconut milk (use the thick cream from the top of the can) or even unsweetened almond milk can be used in the mashed topping. Start with a smaller amount and add more until you reach your desired creamy consistency.
  • Gluten-Free Thickening Agents: In place of coconut flour, tapioca flour (also known as tapioca starch) or arrowroot flour (arrowroot starch) are excellent 1:1 substitutes for thickening the gravy. They are both grain-free and Paleo/Whole30 compliant.
  • Broth Options: Enhance the richness of your gravy by using high-quality bone broth or savory beef broth instead of chicken stock. This can add an even deeper, more complex flavor profile to the meat filling.
  • Add More Veggies: Feel free to incorporate other finely diced vegetables into the meat filling, such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or even chopped spinach, for added nutrients and texture.
  • Make Ahead: This dish is fantastic for meal prep! Assemble the entire pie, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 2 days before baking. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the fridge.
  • Freezing Instructions: To freeze, wrap the cooled, baked pie (or unbaked assembled pie) tightly in plastic wrap and then foil. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating or baking.
