The allure of a classic Black Forest Cake has always been undeniable to me. The rich symphony of dark chocolate, luscious whipped cream, and tart cherries creates a flavor profile that is simply irresistible. For a long time, I dreamt of capturing this exquisite taste in a healthier, paleo-friendly format. At the same time, I had been perfecting my Fudgy Paleo Brownies, a recipe that has inspired countless delicious variations.
It was only a matter of time before these two culinary desires converged. The result? These extraordinary Paleo Black Forest Brownies. The combination proved to be utterly magical – incredibly fudgy, cherry-studded brownies, generously slathered with a layer of velvety Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting, and crowned with a delicate dollop of homemade coconut whipped cream. This dessert isn’t just delightful; it’s crafted entirely from wholesome, non-processed ingredients, making every bite a guilt-free pleasure.
A Taste of Germany: My Hamburg Memories
These Black Forest Brownies do more than just tantalize the taste buds; they transport me back to a cherished trip to Hamburg, Germany. It’s truly amazing how food possesses the power to evoke such vivid memories, isn’t it?
Perhaps it’s just my deep affection for all things culinary, but many of my most treasured travel recollections are intricately woven with the flavors of local dishes, the atmosphere of bustling restaurants, and the exciting adventures that accompanied them. Food isn’t merely sustenance; it’s a gateway to culture, a storyteller, and a powerful anchor for nostalgia.
My journey to Hamburg took place during a time when I was studying abroad in Lyon, France, and my boyfriend was across the continent in Germany. A weekend visit to him revealed a vibrant city with an unexpectedly diverse and exceptional food scene. It wasn’t just the traditional German fare that impressed me; it was the sheer quality and authenticity of everything we tried.
I recall savoring the most authentic Chinese food, an unexpected delight in northern Germany. We also indulged in an unbelievably delicious Italian pizza, its crust perfectly crispy and toppings bursting with flavor. The culinary highlight, however, was undoubtedly the steak at a Portuguese steakhouse – hands down, the best steak I have ever tasted, cooked to perfection and rich with savory goodness. These diverse gastronomic experiences were a testament to Hamburg’s cosmopolitan spirit, proving that exceptional food transcends geographical boundaries.
The German Pastry Adventure
That weekend in Hamburg, my boyfriend and I embarked on what could only be described as a joyous German pastry binge. Every corner we turned seemed to present a new opportunity for indulgence. We purchased these delectable treats from local grocery stores, quaint bakeries with their windows filled with tempting displays, cozy coffee shops, and even a department store! Yes, an unexpected cafeteria within a department store boasted an absurdly extensive spread of delicious pastries. The temptation to buy every single pastry I laid eyes on was almost unbearable.
As my visit drew to a close, a realization dawned on me: I hadn’t yet tried an authentic Black Forest Cake in its homeland. Determined to rectify this, we sought out a small bakery and purchased a slice, intending to enjoy it al fresco on a park bench. However, our search for the perfect bench proved elusive, and we ultimately found ourselves eating the magnificent cake in one of those small, covered bus stops, much to the amusement of passersby.
The slightly cramped quarters and curious glances from strangers faded into insignificance the moment I took a bite. That Black Forest Cake was absolutely incredible – a sublime blend of rich chocolate, kirsch-soaked cherries, and fresh cream. It was a moment of pure bliss, regardless of our unconventional dining spot. Later, as we navigated our way back, we serendipitously stumbled upon a charming little pancake place right by the water. We ordered fluffy pancakes adorned with homemade fruit coulis, a perfect, sweet conclusion to an already memorable morning. These delightful culinary escapades, from the grand pastry tour to the intimate bus stop cake experience, all came flooding back with each bite of my homemade Paleo Black Forest Brownies.
Crafting the Perfect Paleo Black Forest Brownies
Now, let’s circle back to these magnificent brownies. My vision for them included a beautiful, layered presentation, which meant ensuring they were perfectly set and cooled before cutting. Given their inherently fudgy texture, I found that chilling the entire pan in the refrigerator for an hour or two made slicing them into clean, neat squares significantly easier.
Next, I whipped up a batch of my signature Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting. This frosting is a game-changer, offering a rich, decadent chocolate flavor and silky-smooth texture without any dairy or refined sugars, thanks to the magic of avocado. Then came the coconut whipped cream, a component I’ve finally mastered for effortless preparation. The ultimate secret, I discovered, is simply placing the can of full-fat coconut cream in the fridge for several hours, or even overnight. This chilling allows the cream to separate and solidify, making it incredibly easy to whip into a light, airy, and stable cream that holds its shape beautifully for days, even after being stored in a Tupperware in the fridge.
The final step was the art of assembly. I approached each brownie piece individually, ensuring every serving was a miniature masterpiece. First, a generous layer of the rich Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting was spread over each fudgy brownie square. Following this, a delightful dollop of the airy coconut whipped cream was added, creating a beautiful contrast in color and texture. To complete the classic Black Forest aesthetic, each frosted and cream-topped brownie was finished with a single, glistening cherry. The combination of fudgy brownie, decadent frosting, and light whipped cream is an indulgence that truly speaks for itself. It’s a symphony of flavors and textures that satisfies deeply.
Bringing a small container of these brownies to work each day this week was a highlight, literally brightening my day. Knowing that these delectable treats were crafted from non-processed, wholesome ingredients – free from traditional flour, butter, or artificial chemicals – transformed them from a simple dessert into the ultimate paleo indulgence. It’s a testament to the fact that healthy eating doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or decadence.

- Servings: 8
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 35 mins
- Total Time: 45 mins
Ingredients
Brownie:
- 4 Tbs melted coconut oil
- ½ of an avocado, mashed (4 Tbs)
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup + ¼ cup Enjoy Life chocolate chips, separated
- ½ cup maple syrup
- ¼ cup honey
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 4 eggs
- 1 Tbs vanilla extract
- ¾ cup almond flour
- ¼ cup coconut flour (Nutiva Organic is recommended for quality and price)
- 1.5 cups chopped cherries (frozen works well)
Whipped Cream:
- 1 can of coconut cream (Savoy brand, with only coconut and water as ingredients, is excellent)
- 1 Tbs honey
- 1 Tbs maple syrup
- 1 Tbs vanilla extract
Instructions
- Begin by placing a can of coconut cream in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the cream to separate and chill thoroughly.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Grease an 8×8 inch baking pan with coconut oil.
- Melt the coconut oil in a heatproof bowl. Add ¼ cup of chocolate chips to the melted coconut oil.
- Place the bowl over a pan of gently simmering hot water (creating a double boiler effect). Stir until the chocolate chips are completely melted and smooth. Remove from heat and whisk the chocolate and coconut oil mixture until fully combined.
- In a large bowl (Bowl #1), combine the mashed avocado with the melted chocolate and coconut oil mixture. Whisk until smooth. Incorporate the eggs, maple syrup, honey, and vanilla extract, whisking vigorously until the mixture thickens and all ingredients are thoroughly blended.
- In a separate medium bowl (Bowl #2), combine the almond flour, coconut flour, salt, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. Whisk these dry ingredients together until well mixed.
- Gradually pour the dry ingredients from Bowl #2 into the wet ingredients in Bowl #1. Mix gently with a fork or whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Gently fold in the remaining ¼ cup of chocolate chips and the 1½ cups of chopped cherries into the brownie batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared 8×8 inch pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for approximately 35 minutes. The center may still appear slightly moist, which is perfect for a fudgy brownie texture.
- Allow the brownies to cool completely at room temperature, then transfer the pan to the refrigerator for about 60 minutes. This chilling step is crucial for achieving clean cuts.
- While the brownies are chilling, take out the cooled can of coconut cream from the fridge. Carefully scoop out the thick, solid coconut cream from the top of the can, leaving any watery liquid behind.
- Place the solid coconut cream, 1 Tbs honey, 1 Tbs maple syrup, and 1 Tbs vanilla extract into a cold bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip the mixture until it becomes light, fluffy, and forms stiff peaks, resembling traditional whipped cream. If the cream isn’t whipping thick enough, try placing the bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes, then re-whipping. Store the coconut whipped cream in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble.
- If you desire an extra layer of decadence, prepare a batch of Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting.
- Once the brownies are thoroughly chilled, you can either frost and top the entire slab in the pan or, for a more elegant presentation (which is what I prefer), cut individual brownie pieces first.
- Carefully cut the chilled brownies into squares. For each individual piece, spread a layer of the Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting on top, then add a generous dollop of the homemade coconut whipped cream, and finally, crown it with a fresh or preserved cherry.
