And, as an added bonus, this abundance of lemons meant a plethora of lemon-inspired drinks and culinary creations were available throughout the area, making every meal and snack a zestful delight.

But our absolute top culinary priority, prominently noted on our itinerary in capital letters, was to “TRY THE DELIZIA AL LIMONE.” This local specialty, a lemon cake from the Amalfi Coast region, had captivated my attention during my pre-trip research. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I soon discovered it’s a delightful, dome-shaped sponge cake infused with lemon cream and covered in a light, whipped lemon frosting. True to its name, it was an absolute delight, and I’m now determined to recreate a Paleo version of it one day!

Our inaugural lunch in Positano was at Da Vincenzo, a restaurant highly recommended by our hotel. It offered stunning views of the sparkling sea and the vibrant tapestry of Positano itself.
We began with a truly exquisite “fried” appetizer trio featuring a crispy rice ball, a delicate fried zucchini flower, and a savory fried ravioli. I recall thinking, “Could I possibly eat this every single day of my life?” For my main course, I savored a divine tomato mozzarella pasta dish, generously topped with fresh homemade burrata. Words truly fail to capture the sheer deliciousness of this creation. My husband, equally satisfied, devoured a flavorful caramelized onion beef ragu; its rapid disappearance was testament to its superb taste.

Every dish was incredibly fresh and bursting with flavor. The unique flavor profiles were memorable, and dining literally on the ocean was a truly special treat. The mussels, in particular, were some of the freshest I’ve ever tasted in my life.
Many visitors make Da Adolfo an all-day affair, renting sun loungers by the restaurant to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy drinks by the sea. These chairs typically cost around 8 Euros and require advance reservation. We didn’t opt for this full-day experience, as it was a rainy day and we had a boat ride planned, though even on a rainy day, Da Adolfo’s charm shone through.
For dinner on our second night in Positano, we discovered Ristorante Da Constantino, which proved to be, hands-down, the best Italian food we tasted in Positano. This was authentic, family-made Italian cuisine, and both my husband and I still regret not returning for a second meal during our stay! We savored exquisite homemade gnocchi in a rich tomato sauce, perfectly cooked penne with tomato sauce, a classic mozzarella pizza, and a delectable homemade tiramisu. Every dish was simply perfect, embodying the kind of heartwarming, traditional Italian fare we had hoped to enjoy on our honeymoon. Located high in the hills of Positano, Da Constantino also offers breathtaking panoramic views, and their complimentary shuttle service made getting to and from the restaurant incredibly easy and convenient.
For lunch on our third day, we ventured to Ristorante Saraceno d’Oro. While it requires a bit of a hike uphill to reach, the journey itself is part of the experience, leading you past charming hidden gems along the way. The physical activity also felt wonderfully rewarding, especially knowing a fantastic meal awaited us at the top. I must give special praise to their spaghetti meat sauce – it was undoubtedly one of the best I have ever tasted! The sausage pizza was also incredibly delicious. We dined outdoors, surrounded by lush trees and the cheerful sight of lemon groves, creating a truly Mediterranean and peaceful ambiance. To toast our delightful meal, we each enjoyed mini bottles of Champagne, just because we could!
Our final dinner experience was at La Tagliata, a unique family-style restaurant where there’s no menu – you simply pay a set price per person for an abundant feast. While I wouldn’t say I was entirely “in love” with every single dish, the overall experience was absolutely worth it. The restaurant’s location is exceptionally high up in the hills, offering such incredible panoramic views that you genuinely feel perched among the clouds in a rustic Italian treehouse.
Dining at La Tagliata means enjoying a multi-course meal, complemented by unlimited wine – yes, you read that correctly, unlimited wine! A crucial piece of advice: do not fill up too quickly on the initial courses, as there is an astonishing amount of food to come. It was incredibly fun trying such a diverse array of cheese, vegetable, and meat dishes, but by the end, I simply couldn’t eat another bite. The meal concludes in a truly memorable fashion with singing and musical instruments being passed around, involving all the staff in a festive, lively atmosphere. It was quite an experience, as captured by a short video I took!
Beyond dining, I highly recommend enjoying a drink at the Champagne Bar at Le Sirenuse. Why? It offers arguably the most spectacular views for a drink in all of Positano, and the hotel itself is a historic, classic, and utterly magnificent establishment. This is an absolute must-do! As staying there was beyond our budget, many people suggested simply going for a drink to soak in the ambiance, which was a brilliant idea. In general, most of the super-fancy hotels in the area feature stunning restaurants and bars, so taking the opportunity to enjoy a drink or a meal there is a fantastic way to experience their luxurious offerings without the full cost of a stay.
Exploring Positano’s Unique Shopping Scene
Of all the beautiful towns we visited along the Amalfi Coast, Positano truly stood out for its exceptional shopping opportunities. My husband and I were captivated by the sheer number of quaint, locally-owned boutiques lining its winding streets. I managed to find some fantastic sunglasses (a necessity after realizing I’d left mine at home!), while my husband discovered stylish swimsuits, a unique signet ring, and some comfortable shoes. The retail therapy here was truly a delight!
A quintessential Positano experience is getting yourself some custom-made sandals. There are numerous workshops where skilled artisans craft personalized footwear right before your eyes. I absolutely adored the sandals I had made at La Botteguccia Positano, so much so that I ended up with two pairs! My husband also managed to find a wonderful, slightly off-the-beaten-path shop that crafted custom sandals for men, a true gem.
The Amalfi Coast is also renowned for its exquisite ceramics. While we certainly visited many ceramic shops in Positano, we ultimately found better deals and a wider selection in Ravello, a topic I’ll delve into further in my next post.
One of my most memorable shopping experiences in Positano was stumbling upon a truly unique antique shop. Tucked away up a hillside on a quiet side street, it was a treasure trove. Some items spilled out onto the street, while others were crammed into a tiny, fascinating interior. An elderly man, who seemed to possess an uncanny ability to understand our desires, guided us in selecting various pieces. This encounter was not just about the items we bought but also the memorable interaction.
You can spot a large head statue in the left corner of the image – a somewhat pained-looking figure – which we ultimately purchased! I had also been keen on buying two magnificent lion door stoppers, but the old man, in a rather amusing turn of events, adamantly refused to sell them to us! He explained that they would be far too heavy to carry and excessively expensive to ship to the USA. While hilarious at the time, seeing a photo of them now, I do find myself wishing I had somehow convinced him to let us buy them.
Unforgettable Boat Rides Along the Amalfi Coast
If there’s one final and unequivocal recommendation I can offer for visiting Positano, it is to absolutely take a boat ride to experience the spectacular coastline. Whether you choose to rent a private boat for a leisurely day or utilize boat services as a scenic form of transportation between towns, seeing the Amalfi Coast from the water is an essential part of the experience. It offers a perspective that simply cannot be matched from land, revealing the dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and vibrant towns as they are truly meant to be seen.
Initially, the idea of renting a boat felt somewhat daunting and complicated. However, I quickly discovered that Positano offers a remarkable variety of options for planning boat excursions, making it far more accessible than anticipated. Many hotels, including ours, provide complimentary boat rides for their guests. Additionally, there are numerous boat taxis available for short trips, and a plethora of private companies offering guided tours. We found the prices for these services to be much more reasonable and affordable than we had originally expected, making it an accessible luxury.
My adventurous husband, for instance, took every possible opportunity to jump off the various cliffs and rock formations we encountered along the coast. (Though, in one instance, I don’t think the couple next to him was particularly thrilled that he chose the rock where the woman was sunbathing topless for his leap – he genuinely didn’t realize until he was already up there!)
We embarked on a memorable four-hour boat tour, which took us well beyond Amalfi itself. On our return journey, we unexpectedly got caught in a sudden storm, an experience that was a peculiar mix of amusing and slightly uncomfortable, leaving us soaked to the bone with icy rain on our faces. However, the unexpected turn of weather only added to the adventure, and upon our return to Positano, the town looked like this:
Even in the rain, Positano retained its utterly romantic allure, proving that its beauty is truly resilient.
As you can undoubtedly gather, I absolutely adored Positano. I found it to be incredibly romantic, offering a perfect blend of the “glamour” for which the Amalfi Coast is renowned, coupled with a wonderfully personable and welcoming atmosphere. During my research, I had encountered numerous complaints about the town’s many hills and the difficulty of getting around. However, my husband and I were not bothered by this in the slightest. In fact, we thoroughly enjoyed the exercise and the opportunity to work off some of the delicious pizza and gelato we indulged in! That being said, I can certainly see how the hilly terrain might pose a challenge for those with mobility issues or an unwillingness to walk uphill, so it’s definitely something to consider when planning your visit.
