Montreal served as our initial gateway, a city that, despite our brief visit, left an indelible mark. We reveled in the historic charm of Old Montreal, indulged in some delightful shopping, and savored what we unequivocally declared the finest poutine we had ever tasted. From Montreal, we rented a car and ventured north, first to the uniquely artistic community of Baie-Saint-Paul, and then onward to La Malbaie, a region renowned for its rich history and stunning riverside setting on the St. Lawrence. Discovering Montreal: A Whirlwind of History, Culture, and Culinary Delights
When I say our stop in Montreal was quick, I mean it was remarkably brief—a mere 12 hours. This fleeting visit, while intensely enjoyable, barely scratched the surface of this magnificent city’s offerings. It has certainly left us yearning for a return, eager to dedicate more time to its extensive exploration.
Our initial plans for a longer stay were disrupted by an unforeseen flight delay of five to six hours, which meant we didn’t touch down in Montreal until a surprising 3 AM. While this certainly threw a wrench into our meticulously detailed itinerary, it presented us with a unique perspective of the city. Witnessing Montreal come alive at 3 AM on a Friday was an unexpectedly fascinating experience. The area around our hotel, affectionately known as “The Plateau,” was buzzing with an incredible energy, teeming with people enjoying the late hours.
Bars, late-night eateries, and the streets themselves were pulsating with activity, creating an atmosphere akin to a lively street festival. This unexpected nocturnal immersion offered a glimpse into Montreal’s dynamic spirit, proving its charm extends far beyond daylight hours. However, our late arrival inevitably led to a delayed start the following morning, causing many of my carefully laid plans to be adjusted.
With limited time, our focus for Montreal narrowed to two essential experiences: exploring the historic district of Old Montreal and savoring its renowned poutine. These became the top priorities on our condensed checklist, ensuring we captured the essence of the city before continuing our journey. Consequently, our morning was dedicated to simply wandering through the enchanting streets of Old Montreal, allowing its timeless beauty to unfold before us.
The Romantic Allure of Old Montreal
Old Montreal is an intensely romantic district, characterized by its impressive stone buildings that evoke a distinct, almost European sensibility. The architectural grandeur, with its intricate details and historic facades, creates an atmosphere where one could easily lose track of time. We spent hours simply strolling through its charming thoroughfares, discovering countless small boutiques, art studios, and hidden courtyards that invite visitors to pause and explore.
During our exploration, I was particularly keen on finding authentic Canadian maple syrup products. While it might sound cliché, maple syrup is more than just a souvenir for me; it’s a cherished all-natural sweetener and a staple in my Paleo baking. However, my absolute favorite architectural aspect in Montreal was observing the charming, colorful houses and apartment buildings where people actually reside. I always find immense pleasure in seeing the local residences in the places I visit, and Montreal’s homes were truly captivating. Each dwelling seemed to feature vibrant pops of color that invariably caught my eye, adding a cheerful and personal touch to the city’s grand facade.
Montreal’s Culinary Adventure: The Quest for Perfect Poutine
Due to our abbreviated stay, we didn’t have the opportunity to sample many of Montreal’s diverse restaurants or culinary offerings—a pleasure we eagerly anticipated making up for in our upcoming Quebec City post. However, extensive research had informed me that Montreal was the definitive place to experience both its famous smoked meat and, of course, authentic poutine. Our quest for the latter led us to La Banquise, a highly-rated poutine restaurant that consistently appeared in glowing reviews. This quirky, 24-hour diner boasts an astonishing array of poutine variations, making it a true mecca for enthusiasts.
For my first foray into this iconic Canadian dish, I opted for the classic poutine: golden fries generously topped with a rich, homemade gravy and fresh cheese curds. It felt imperative to experience the traditional version first, setting a benchmark for future comparisons.
My husband, ever the adventurer, chose the Asterix poutine, a more elaborate creation featuring fries covered in a mushroom gravy, tender smoked meat, cheese curds, and a dollop of sour cream. He absolutely adored it, and his choice offered us the added bonus of sampling Montreal’s renowned smoked meat simultaneously—a delightful win-win situation.
Both poutine selections were utterly phenomenal. Without a doubt, the poutine at La Banquise surpassed every other version I tasted throughout our entire Canadian trip. The secret lay in their gravy; it was incredibly rich, deeply savory, and remarkably reminiscent of the comforting gravy one might enjoy at a Thanksgiving feast. Absolutely delicious.
While the poutine itself was excellent, I must admit a personal, perhaps controversial, opinion: I still don’t quite grasp the appeal of cheese curds. From my non-Canadian perspective, they neither melt into the fries nor impart much flavor, and their texture reminds me somewhat of play-dough. However, I acknowledge this is likely a cultural difference in appreciation! (And yes, I did eat every last one!) This particular detail, while minor, highlights how food experiences can sometimes be both universally enjoyed and individually pondered.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention a fantastic discovery at La Banquise: Bec Cola! This organic, Coca-Cola-like soda, uniquely sweetened with maple syrup, was incredibly refreshing and flavorful. It was an unexpected treat that perfectly complemented our meal.
As previously mentioned, our trip was planned with remarkable spontaneity—just one week prior to departure! This last-minute arrangement necessitated flexibility with flights and accommodations. Our itinerary involved flying into Montreal and departing from Quebec City. Ultimately, we dedicated four days to exploring Quebec City and two days to the picturesque Charlevoix region, which lies north of Quebec City and encompasses charming towns like Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie.
Baie-Saint-Paul: An Artistic Gem in Charlevoix
After our brief yet impactful stop in Montreal, my husband and I embarked on a scenic drive east, then north from Quebec City, to the captivating town of Baie-Saint-Paul. The journey itself was an adventure. For me, the drive was a little nerve-wracking due to numerous signs warning of moose crossings and stretches of dense fog that occasionally obscured our view. Navigating through the misty landscapes added an element of mystery to the journey, but our anticipation grew with every mile.
However, once the fog dissipated, we were greeted by the enchanting sight of Baie-Saint-Paul, a truly charming, bohemian small town. It immediately captivated us with its vibrant energy, bustling with art galleries and unique boutiques. Baie-Saint-Paul holds a special place in Canadian culture, notably as the birthplace of the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil. Another intriguing fact is that one of its main streets boasts one of the highest concentrations of art galleries in all of Canada, making it a true mecca for art lovers and creative spirits.
After the long drive, both my husband and I were craving a much-needed espresso and a little pick-me-up. We were delighted to discover an abundance of wonderful coffee shops, charming candy stores, and inviting bakeries throughout the town. Our search led us to Café Arômes et Saveurs, where we enjoyed a truly delicious coffee. Conveniently, this café was connected to an old-fashioned candy shop, a delightful combination that proved irresistible.
I confess, I got a bit carried away amidst the tempting treats and ended up with a slight stomach ache from indulging in too much candy. But how could one resist matcha chocolate, or the utterly charming displays that beckoned from every shelf? The café also proudly offered maple syrup pie, a revelation that certainly piqued my interest. These small, delightful discoveries truly enhanced our experience in Baie-Saint-Paul.
After a much-needed espresso, we continued our exploration of the town, soaking in its unique bohemian atmosphere and stretching our legs. I nearly purchased a remarkably cool iron toilet paper roll holder from one of the quirky shops, but alas, the practicalities of traveling with only carry-on luggage prevailed. These small, memorable moments of window shopping and admiring local crafts added to the overall charm of Baie-Saint-Paul.
With our bohemian interlude complete, we then resumed our journey, heading even further north to our next destination: La Malbaie, another picturesque town in the heart of the Charlevoix region.
La Malbaie: Riverside Retreat and Culinary Discoveries
To be completely transparent, our primary motivation for visiting La Malbaie was the allure of Le Manoir Richelieu, a majestic five-star hotel perched majestically on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. We envisioned it as the quintessential relaxing getaway for our first wedding anniversary. Online photographs painted a picture of grandeur, highlighting an array of enticing activities: fishing, bike riding, marshmallow roasting over a fire, leisurely walks, charming horse-carriage rides, swimming, and a luxurious spa. Typically, our vacations involve constant movement and exploration, so for this special occasion, we consciously sought a destination where we could simply unwind, stay put, and truly relax.
However, in the spirit of full disclosure, our experience at Le Manoir Richelieu left us somewhat disappointed, as it did not quite meet the five-star service and accommodation standards we had anticipated. While I prefer to maintain a positive tone in my travel posts, I will simply state that this establishment might not align with most travelers’ expectations of a true five-star rating. It’s worth noting that the star rating system for hotels can vary significantly across different countries, a fact I’ve observed during my extensive travels. I’ve encountered two-star accommodations abroad that were absolutely phenomenal, far exceeding expectations, and conversely, four-star establishments that were surprisingly run-down. Despite the hotel’s shortcomings, I am still grateful we had the opportunity to discover this beautiful corner of the world. Waking up to the magnificent view from our hotel room, overlooking the vast St. Lawrence, was indeed a truly lovely experience.
Exploring the local restaurants, neighboring villages, and observing the captivating coastline in the Malbaie area proved to be very interesting. The landscape here is characterized by gently rolling green hills dotted with tiny towns brimming with colorful flowers. There’s a unique paradox to the region’s atmosphere; it felt simultaneously desolate and profoundly warm, a feeling that is quite difficult to articulate but undeniably present. This blend of vast, quiet spaces and welcoming, vibrant communities creates an indelible impression.
For our anniversary dinner, we had an absolutely exquisite meal at Chez Truchon Bistro Auberge. This restaurant prides itself on utilizing locally sourced ingredients, and we opted for a special “menu” that showcased the region’s culinary prowess. Our meal began with a delicate liver pâté mousse appetizer, followed by a truly delicious bison steak, perfectly cooked and accompanied by incredibly rich duck fat fries. Dessert was a delightful cake adorned with fresh fruit, providing a sweet conclusion to a memorable meal.
I must reiterate: duck fat fries. If you have never experienced them, you absolutely must! These fries, cooked in decadent duck fat, achieve an unparalleled level of crispiness and flavor, making them an incredibly indulgent and unforgettable side dish. We wholeheartedly loved Chez Truchon, not only for its exceptional, fresh cuisine but also for the remarkably friendly staff who made our anniversary celebration truly special. It was the perfect spot for such a significant occasion.
The following morning, we indulged in yummy croissants at a local bakery named Pains D’exclamations! This charming establishment exuded a unique ambiance, blending funky modernity with classical elegance, and offered an enticing selection of freshly baked pastries. My croissant, in particular, was a delightful treat, setting a perfect tone for the day.
Ultimately, we decided to depart from our hotel in La Malbaie earlier than planned. To put it concisely, the activities that had initially drawn us to the resort—such as fishing, bike riding, and roasting marshmallows by a fire, as advertised in their brochure—either seemed non-existent or were simply unavailable during our stay. This unexpected turn meant we had the opportunity to spend more time in Quebec City, a place we absolutely adored.
