It’s the kind of soup that makes you feel good from the inside out.

- Diet-Friendly and Inclusive: This recipe is a triumph for various dietary needs. It’s naturally dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free, Paleo, and Whole30 compliant. This means a wider range of people can enjoy its wholesome goodness without worrying about common allergens or strict dietary restrictions. It’s perfect for meal prepping and catering to diverse palates.
- Packed with Nutrient-Rich Vegetables: Boasting a generous serving of sweet potatoes and broccoli, this soup is a true nutritional powerhouse. You’re getting essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber in every bowl, contributing to your overall health and vitality. It’s a delicious way to increase your daily vegetable intake.
- Quick and Easy Preparation: Despite its gourmet taste, this soup is surprisingly simple to make. With straightforward steps and readily available ingredients, you can have a warm, homemade meal on the table in under an hour, making it ideal for busy weeknights.
Essential Ingredients for a Perfect Blend
Crafting this flavorful soup begins with selecting high-quality ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in achieving that perfect creamy texture and balanced taste:
- Sweet Potatoes: The star of the show, providing natural sweetness and a luscious, thick consistency once blended. Rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and fiber, they are both delicious and incredibly nutritious.
- Onion Powder: A foundational seasoning that adds a deep, savory aroma and enhances the overall flavor profile of the soup without the texture of fresh onions.
- Garlic: Fresh minced garlic brings an aromatic depth and pungent flavor that elevates the soup. It’s a classic pairing with sweet potatoes and broccoli.
- Olive Oil: Used for sautéing the aromatics and broccoli, adding a touch of healthy fat and aiding in flavor development.
- Broccoli: Minced broccoli is key for integrating seamlessly into the creamy base, infusing the soup with its unique earthy flavor and a wealth of vitamins, especially Vitamin C and K.
- Chicken Broth or Stock: Forms the flavorful liquid base of the soup. Opt for a good quality broth for the best taste. For a richer, more nutrient-dense option, consider bone broth.
- Coconut Flour: A fantastic gluten-free and grain-free thickener that subtly enhances the soup’s body without altering the flavor significantly.
- Coconut Cream: This is where the magic happens for dairy-free creaminess. Use a high-quality canned coconut cream or the thick part of full-fat coconut milk for the richest, most neutral flavor and velvety texture. I personally recommend Savoy coconut cream for its exceptional consistency and mild taste.
- Nutmeg, Chili Powder, and Rubbed Sage: This trio of spices creates a wonderfully aromatic and balanced flavor, complementing the sweetness of the potatoes and the earthiness of the broccoli with warmth and a subtle kick.
- Salt and Ground Black Pepper: Essential for seasoning, bringing out all the natural flavors and ensuring the soup is perfectly balanced.

Customizing Your Soup: Additions & Substitutions
This recipe is incredibly versatile, allowing for various adjustments to suit your dietary needs or personal taste preferences. Don’t hesitate to get creative!
- For a Vegan Version: Easily transform this into a vegan delight by simply substituting chicken stock with your favorite vegetable broth or stock. The rest of the ingredients are already plant-based.
- Alternative Thickeners: If coconut flour isn’t available, tapioca flour (also known as tapioca starch) or arrowroot flour (arrowroot starch) can be used as excellent gluten-free alternatives to achieve the desired thickness. Use the same measurements as coconut flour, but be aware that tapioca and arrowroot tend to thicken more quickly.
- Boost Protein and Nutrients: Swap out regular chicken broth for bone broth to significantly increase the protein content and add beneficial collagen to your soup, making it even more nourishing.
- Spice It Up: Experiment with additional spices to create new flavor profiles. Curry powder, for instance, pairs exceptionally well with sweet potatoes and coconut. For a delicious twist, you might enjoy trying a Curried Broccoli Cauliflower Soup, which could inspire a similar blend in this recipe. Smoked paprika can also add a delightful smoky depth.
- Add More Vegetables: Feel free to incorporate other finely diced vegetables such as carrots, celery, or bell peppers when sautéing the garlic and broccoli for an extra nutritional boost and textural variety.
- Creamier Texture: For an even richer, more decadent soup, increase the amount of coconut cream slightly or add a spoonful of cashew cream (if not strictly Whole30/Paleo due to cashews being legumes for some definitions).

Effortless Step-by-Step Preparation
Follow these simple instructions to create your perfect bowl of creamy broccoli sweet potato soup:
- Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Begin by slicing your sweet potatoes into roughly even pieces. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Carefully add the sliced sweet potatoes to the boiling water and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until they are tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork.
- Peel and Set Aside: Once the sweet potatoes are fork-tender, drain them thoroughly. If you didn’t peel them before boiling, now is the ideal time to do so, as the skin will slip off effortlessly once cooked. Set the peeled sweet potatoes aside.
- Sauté Aromatics: In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant but not browned.
- Cook the Broccoli: Add the minced broccoli and onion powder to the pot. Stir well to combine with the garlic and olive oil. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the broccoli begins to soften slightly.
- Build the Broth Base: Pour the chicken stock into the pot with the cooked vegetables. Stir and bring the mixture to a gentle boil for about 2 minutes. Next, sprinkle in the coconut flour and whisk vigorously until it is thoroughly combined and no lumps remain.
- Add Cream and Spices: Reduce the heat. Stir in the coconut cream, salt, ground black pepper, a dash of nutmeg, chili powder, and rubbed sage. Whisk everything together until the spices are well distributed and the soup is smooth. Allow it to simmer gently for another 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld.
- Blend to Creaminess: Carefully add the cooked sweet potatoes to the soup pot. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup directly in the pot until it reaches a smooth, creamy consistency. Alternatively, if you don’t have an immersion blender, carefully transfer the soup in batches to a regular blender and blend until smooth (be cautious when blending hot liquids). Once blended, pour the soup back into the pot, reheat if necessary to your desired temperature, and serve immediately.
Chef’s Tips for an Unforgettable Soup
Achieving the perfect creamy and flavorful broccoli sweet potato soup is easy with these expert tips:
Sweet Potato Peeling Made Easy: While you can peel sweet potatoes before boiling, I find it much easier to wait until after they are cooked. The skin softens significantly and peels away almost effortlessly, saving you time and effort.
Effortless Broccoli Mincing: For perfectly minced broccoli that blends seamlessly into the soup, a food processor is your best friend. Simply pulse the broccoli florets a few times until they are finely chopped. If you don’t have a food processor, a sharp knife and a bit of patience will also do the trick.
Choosing the Right Coconut Cream: The quality of your coconut cream can significantly impact the final taste and texture of your dairy-free soup. Look for brands that contain no added ingredients or preservatives, just pure coconut. My top recommendation for its neutral flavor and rich, thick texture is Savoy coconut cream. It truly makes a difference in achieving that luxurious creaminess.
Delightful Add-Ins and Garnishes: Toasted nuts or seeds can add a wonderful crunch. Fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley provide a burst of freshness. For an extra layer of savory flavor and texture, I highly recommend adding crispy crumbled bacon to your soup. If you’re not strictly adhering to a Dairy-free, Paleo, or Whole30 diet, a sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese can also be a delicious addition.
Adjusting Soup Consistency: If you prefer a thinner soup, gradually add more chicken or vegetable stock after blending until it reaches your desired consistency. Remember to taste and adjust seasonings if you add more liquid.
Meal Prep Friendly: This soup is fantastic for meal prepping! It stores wonderfully in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days and freezes beautifully for longer storage. Simply thaw and reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Enhancing Flavor: For an even deeper flavor, let the soup sit for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator after blending. The flavors will have more time to meld and intensify.

The Nutritional Powerhouse: Health Benefits of This Soup
Beyond its incredible taste, this Dairy-Free Broccoli Sweet Potato Soup offers a wealth of health benefits, thanks to its wholesome ingredients and adherence to clean eating principles:
- Rich in Vitamins and Minerals: Sweet potatoes are excellent sources of beta-carotene (which converts to Vitamin A), essential for vision, immune function, and skin health. They also provide Vitamin C, B vitamins, and potassium. Broccoli contributes generously with Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and folate, powerful antioxidants that support overall well-being.
- Abundant in Fiber: Both sweet potatoes and broccoli are high in dietary fiber, which is crucial for digestive health. Fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes satiety, and supports a healthy gut microbiome.
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Many ingredients in this soup, including sweet potatoes, broccoli, garlic, and spices like nutmeg and chili powder, contain compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation throughout the body.
- Supports Immune System: The high content of Vitamin C from broccoli and sweet potatoes, combined with the immune-boosting properties of garlic, makes this soup an excellent choice for supporting a robust immune system.
- Dairy-Free Goodness: For those with dairy sensitivities or allergies, or those simply choosing to avoid dairy, this soup provides a delicious and creamy alternative without any discomfort. Coconut cream offers healthy fats and a satisfying texture.
- Gluten-Free and Grain-Free: Ideal for individuals with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or those following a Paleo or Whole30 lifestyle, this soup eliminates gluten and grains without sacrificing flavor or substance.
- Whole30 and Paleo Compliant: Adhering to the principles of Whole30 and Paleo diets, this soup is free from added sugars, legumes, and artificial ingredients, promoting clean eating and supporting metabolic health.
Serving Suggestions & Storage Tips
Make the most of your delicious homemade soup with these ideas:
- Serving: This soup is a complete meal on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with a side salad, gluten-free bread, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley. Don’t forget those optional bacon crumbles for an extra layer of flavor and texture!
- Storage: Allow the soup to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days, making it perfect for meal prep throughout the week.
- Freezing: For longer storage, this soup freezes beautifully. Pour cooled soup into freezer-safe containers or bags, leaving some headspace for expansion. It can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheating: Gently reheat the soup on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until it’s warmed through. You may need to add a splash of broth or water if it has thickened too much in the fridge. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave.

Ingredients
- 2 lbs sweet potatoes, sliced
- 1.5 tsp onion powder
- 1 Tbs minced garlic, (approx. 3 cloves)
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 1 1/2 cups minced broccoli, (about half a head, minced in food processor)
- 3 cups chicken broth or stock
- 2 Tbs coconut flour
- 1 1/2 cups canned coconut cream, (one 14 ounce can, I like Savoy brand)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- a dash of nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp rubbed sage
- optional cooked bacon, crumbled, for garnish
- optional crumbled goat cheese, (omit for strictly Paleo, Whole30 or Dairy-free)
Instructions
-
Heat a large pot of water over high heat until it boils. Add the sliced sweet potatoes and cook for 15-20 minutes, until fork tender.
-
Drain the sweet potatoes. If you didn’t peel them beforehand, carefully remove the skin now (it’s often easier after cooking). Set aside.
-
Heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil in a large soup pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant.
-
Add the minced broccoli and onion powder to the pan. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring often, until the broccoli slightly softens.
-
Pour the chicken broth into the pan, stir, and bring the mixture to a light boil for 2 minutes. Then, add the coconut flour and whisk continuously until it is evenly distributed and the soup begins to thicken.
-
Next, add the coconut cream, salt, pepper, nutmeg, chili powder, and rubbed sage to the soup. Whisk thoroughly to combine all the ingredients. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
-
Add the cooked sweet potatoes to the soup. Use an immersion blender to mix everything together directly in the pot until the soup is smooth and creamy. Alternatively, carefully transfer the soup in batches to a standard blender and process until smooth. Pour the blended soup back into the pan, reheat gently to your desired serving temperature, and serve hot.
Notes
- To make this soup completely Vegan, ensure you use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock.
- Instead of coconut flour, you can successfully use tapioca flour or arrowroot flour as thickeners.
- If you prefer a thinner consistency, gradually add more chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a vegan version) after blending until desired thinness is achieved. Remember to taste and adjust seasonings.
- While delicious with crumbled bacon and goat cheese for garnish, omit these if you need to keep the soup strictly Paleo, Whole30, or Dairy-free.
- This soup keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. It can also be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
