It feels surreal to think that just last month, I was completely immersed in the diverse beauty of the Netherlands, journeying from charming towns to bustling cities. My unforgettable adventure began in the historic city of Arnhem, then led me through the picturesque streets of Amersfoort, the famous cheese market of Gouda, the iconic canals of Delft, and finally, the serene coastal village of Veere. Time truly has a way of flying by, but the memories are vivid, and I’m thrilled to finally share the details of this incredible trip.
One of the most striking aspects of the Netherlands, especially coming from the sun-drenched but often flat landscapes of Florida, was the sheer abundance of lush greenery and ancient forests. Everywhere we turned, there were opportunities for invigorating “forest bathing,” a practice my body absolutely relished. Beyond the natural beauty, I was profoundly inspired by the vibrant, active lifestyle embraced by people of all ages across the country. And, of course, no Dutch journey would be complete without indulging in copious amounts of delicious cheese and comforting pancakes. This trip was a perfect blend of exploration, culinary delights, and moments of genuine reflection.
This grand European escapade was a wonderful family affair. My husband, mother, father, brother, sister, brother-in-law, and two energetic nephews all embarked on this journey together. The initial invitation was for a wedding in Belgium, and given the distance, we seized the opportunity to extend our travels, planning sightseeing adventures both before and after the matrimonial celebration. Our itinerary was packed with diverse experiences, designed to create lasting memories for everyone.
Our European journey kicked off with our flight into Amsterdam, setting the stage for an enriching week exploring the Netherlands and a portion of Belgium. Following the beautiful wedding festivities, we then ventured further north, spending another fantastic week soaking in the charm and culture of Stockholm, Sweden. Each leg of the trip offered its own unique delights, but the Dutch leg truly captured our hearts with its distinctive blend of history, nature, and vibrant local life.
Arnhem: Nature, Art, and an Active Lifestyle
Our Dutch odyssey commenced with a stay at Hotel Groot Warnsborn, an exquisite estate nestled within a serene forest, just moments from the vibrant town of Arnhem. This wasn’t merely a hotel; it was an immersive experience in tranquility. The natural scenery was beyond peaceful, with ancient trees stretching skyward and countless winding trails inviting exploration. We could have spent days, perhaps even weeks, wandering these grounds and still found new corners to discover.
Adding to the allure was the hotel’s breakfast, an absolute revelation. Each morning, we were greeted with the aroma of freshly baked bread, complemented by an array of local delights: sweet fruits, rich honey, artisanal jams, creamy yogurt, and a selection of local cheeses. For those craving something savory, fresh eggs and crispy bacon were also on offer. It was, without exaggeration, breakfast heaven, a perfect start to our active days. I particularly remember a red, oval-shaped plum that was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, bursting with sweetness and flavor.
What truly set Hotel Groot Warnsborn and its surroundings apart was the sheer abundance of outdoor activities available. From a life-size chess set that sparked competitive fun to numerous children’s cars and toys that delighted my nephews, there was never a dull moment. But the real treasure lay in the miles and miles of pristine forest trails, perfect for walking, hiking, or cycling. We spent blissful hours traversing the grounds, breathing in the crisp, fresh air, and creating cherished family memories. The sheer scale of the forest was breathtaking; I recall standing amidst the towering trees, feeling incredibly small, yet profoundly connected to nature.
A little family anecdote: keep an eye out for my sister’s son, Hugo, and his famously expressive “stink-eye” in some of the photos. These candid moments truly capture the joy and spirit of our family journey.
Beyond the immediate comforts of our hotel, Arnhem and its surrounding areas struck me as incredibly family-friendly. What truly astonished and inspired me, however, was the pervasive active lifestyle of its inhabitants. Observing people of all ages – from young children to the elderly – walking, hiking, and cycling with such vigor was truly remarkable. In all my travels, I have never witnessed such an active population, particularly among the older generations. This profound observation sparked a significant personal reflection, prompting me to consider how I might integrate more consistent and varied physical activity into my own life. While I already engage in workouts and walks, the level of integrated, everyday movement I witnessed in the Netherlands was on an entirely different scale, highlighting the need for a shift in habits now rather than later.
It wasn’t just a few people; it felt like virtually everyone was either walking or cycling. I couldn’t possibly count the thousands of individuals we saw on bikes every single day. This pervasive culture of movement is something I simply don’t encounter in my home country, and it truly made me ponder the underlying reasons. While the intense heat in Florida certainly plays a role, I believe the core issue lies in the urban planning and infrastructure in the USA. Our cities and towns are often designed without vibrant, walkable and bikeable centers. Everything is so incredibly spread out and necessitates car travel, a stark contrast to the compact, human-centric design prevalent in many Dutch communities. Without intending to cause offense, my observations led me to conclude that this inherent active lifestyle contributes significantly to older individuals in the Netherlands maintaining a much better physical condition compared to their counterparts in the United States. This “tangent” might seem extensive, but it was genuinely one of the most impactful insights I gained during my time in Arnhem.
One of the primary motivations for our stay in this area was to visit the renowned Kröller-Müller Museum. This institution has been on my father’s bucket list for years, primarily due to its astounding collection of Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpieces. As a huge admirer of Van Gogh, he is, in fact, my favorite painter, I was incredibly excited. Stepping into the galleries, I found myself utterly mesmerized by the vibrant colors and rich textures of his paintings. Each brushstroke seemed to tell a story, drawing me deeper into his unique world. From the swirling skies of his landscapes to the contemplative portraits, the emotional depth was palpable.
How could one not feel a surge of happiness when gazing upon such an explosion of color and profound artistry? It was truly challenging to tear my eyes away from some of his pieces, each one a testament to his genius. If your travels ever bring you to this region, I wholeheartedly, and with the strongest recommendation, urge you to visit this museum. It’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
After a morning filled with art and cultural enrichment at the museum, our appetites were ready for a hearty lunch. We discovered a delightful spot called Eetcafé De 3-Ster, which boasted super cute outdoor seating adorned with inviting, plush pillows – perfect for a relaxed family meal. The friendly gentleman working there immediately made us feel welcome. We savored excellent sandwiches and, upon request, indulged in some traditional Dutch bacon pancakes. While not explicitly on the menu, their willingness to whip up this beloved dish for us was a testament to their warm hospitality. These savory pancakes, a personal favorite, were a delicious highlight.
Amersfoort: Medieval Charm and Sweet Delights
Our next destination was a spontaneous day trip to Amersfoort, a decision prompted by a captivating photograph of one of its waterfront entrances and some quick research into its beautifully preserved medieval town center. We were absolutely not disappointed; in fact, our expectations were exceeded. The city is enchanting, encircled by several tranquil canals, their banks lined with charming homes and gracefully arching trees that create a truly romantic atmosphere. Amersfoort, with its timeless beauty, is undeniably a dreamy city, offering countless picturesque views at every turn.
Stepping inside Amersfoort’s historic core felt like stepping back in time. The city boasts charming cobblestone streets, lined with quaint shops and beautifully preserved buildings. Every corner revealed intricate architectural details, inviting us to pause and soak in the atmosphere. We spent several delightful hours simply wandering, taking countless photos, and browsing through local boutiques until the irresistible call of hunger led us in search of a much-needed snack.
Rather than a full meal, we craved a cozy spot for coffee and some sweet treats. Our search led us to Coffee Corazon, a decision that proved to be truly wonderful. Given that my sister, brother, father, and I all share nut allergies, finding suitable desserts can sometimes be a challenge. However, Coffee Corazon had a fantastic selection! We happily ordered one of every nut-free dessert they offered, creating a delightful shared feast where we could all taste and enjoy a variety of treats.
Our indulgent selection included a rich, homemade cheesecake, a decadent chocolate cake, and a comforting Dutch apple pie. Every single bite was absolutely heavenly, making our coffee break an unforgettable culinary experience. Fully satisfied, we took one last stroll to capture a few more photos of Amersfoort’s enchanting sights before heading towards our next exciting destination.
(And yes, there’s that infamous stink eye again!)
Het Loo Palace: Dutch Royal Grandeur and Baroque Gardens
Our next cultural immersion was a half-day visit to the magnificent Palace Het Loo. Built in the 17th century, this former royal residence offers a distinctly different experience compared to many other palaces and castles I’ve explored across Europe. The journey to the palace itself sets a unique tone: visitors first enter what feels like an opulent stable area, where peacocks majestically roam the lush green lawns. From there, a long, elegant tree-lined path leads directly to the palace facade, building anticipation with every step.
The architecture of Het Loo is characterized by its neatness and orderly symmetry. While undeniably beautiful, its exterior might appear less extravagant than, say, the grandiose châteaux of France. However, this understated elegance on the outside belies the sheer opulence and lavishness found within its walls. The interior truly lives up to the royal standard, showcasing magnificent period furnishings, intricate artworks, and a palpable sense of history.
For me, the most awe-inspiring aspect of Het Loo Palace was undoubtedly the breathtaking gardens situated behind the main building. Prior to our visit, I had read descriptions referring to them as the “Versailles of Holland,” emphasizing their baroque splendor. Despite this promising introduction, I truly didn’t know what to expect. What unfolded before my eyes, however, completely blew me away. The gardens are a masterpiece of design, featuring meticulously arranged layers upon layers of vibrant flowers, diverse plant life, and exquisite fountains. The sheer scale and intricate detail of the baroque design create a harmonious blend of natural beauty and human artistry, inviting endless admiration and exploration.
The gardens would be an absolutely perfect spot for a leisurely picnic, a place to truly unwind and breathe in the fresh, perfumed air. We spent a delightful afternoon here, captivated by the scenery. We found joy in simple pleasures like feeding the fish in one of the ornate fountains, marveling at the endless variety of unique flowers, and simply exploring the intricate pathways. Het Loo Palace offers a regal yet tranquil escape, showcasing a different facet of Dutch heritage.
Gouda: A Taste of Dutch Cheese and Artisan Chocolate
Our next logical stop was the charming city of Gouda, and yes, our mission was quite literally to indulge in Gouda cheese in Gouda! We couldn’t resist. We found a wonderfully quaint cheese shop where we purchased a generous selection of cheeses, which we’ve been savoring ever since. One of the greatest joys of exploring the cheese shops here is the opportunity to taste almost every variety. The sheer number of types and flavors of Gouda is astounding, and the freshness is simply unparalleled, a true delight for any cheese lover.
While Gouda, as a city, felt a bit more commercialized than I had anticipated, it still possessed incredibly beautiful areas and an abundance of shops to explore. The main square was bustling, but we quickly discovered that the true charm lay in its quieter corners.
To truly get a sense of local life and escape the larger crowds, we opted to wander down the smaller side streets. This proved to be an excellent decision. These quaint thoroughfares were lined with so many adorable buildings and intricate details, each telling a story of Gouda’s rich past. We found that the independent stores tucked away on these side streets often offered more unique and artisanal goods than those in the bustling town center, providing a more authentic shopping experience.
One of the most memorable experiences in Gouda was an unplanned visit to a chocolate shop named PUUR chocolate. I was initially drawn in by its charming storefront, but the moment I stepped inside, the overwhelming and intoxicating aroma of fresh chocolate was almost too much to bear – in the best possible way! I immediately gathered my family, and together, we began the delightful task of choosing which exquisite chocolates to buy. During our selection process, the passionate owner, a true artisan, started offering us samples of his incredible creations. He generously let us taste his chocolate in its purest form, intricate ganaches he was developing and testing, and his most popular, beloved chocolates. It was an extraordinary tasting journey.
The entire experience was not only incredibly fun but also utterly delicious. Just look at my face in that photo! The owner had just told us about his passion fruit chocolate, and I simply couldn’t contain my excitement. This was, without a doubt, the best chocolate I tasted throughout my entire European trip, and quite possibly one of the finest I’ve ever had in my life. If you ever find yourself in Gouda, a visit to PUUR chocolate is an absolute, non-negotiable must-try!
Delft: Blue and White Pottery & Lively Student Life
Our final night in the enchanting Netherlands was spent in the historic city of Delft, a place renowned worldwide for its exquisite blue and white pottery, famously known as Delftware. Naturally, our itinerary included a visit to the official Delft museum and factory. Here, we not only admired the intricate artistry and historical significance of the pottery but also indulged in a bit of retail therapy, purchasing a few cherished pieces to bring home as souvenirs. It’s hard to resist the allure of such unique and beautiful craftsmanship!
I truly fell in love with Delft. The city exudes a captivating charm, characterized by its picturesque buildings, serene canals, and inviting open spaces dotted with bustling outdoor seating areas and vibrant restaurants. Beyond its historical beauty, Delft also possesses a distinctly youthful and energetic vibe. This is largely due to the presence of a university—or possibly two—within the city, evidenced by the lively student population we saw everywhere, adding a dynamic layer to the city’s ancient streets.
On the particular night we were there, it seemed as though some significant university event was underway, perhaps akin to fraternity and sorority recruitment nights, though I understand these specific institutions don’t exist in Europe. Nevertheless, it felt like similar introductory or social events were happening between various departments or schools within the university. There were numerous boat parties, complete with live bands, animatedly cruising along the canals on large barges, while throngs of college students, uniformly clad in matching t-shirts, filled the streets. The entire city seemed to be buzzing with their youthful energy. It looked like an incredible amount of fun, making me briefly wish I had considered studying abroad in Delft during my own college years! The atmosphere was infectious and truly unique.
We spent the evening soaking in the sights, enjoying the unique ambiance, and eventually settled down for dinner at one of the inviting outdoor cafes lining the canals. While the name of the establishment escapes me, the meal itself remains a vivid memory. We savored a traditional Dutch beef stew, rich and comforting, followed by a truly charming dessert: fresh fruit and creamy ice cream served delightfully in a miniature Dutch shoe. It was a perfect, whimsical end to our time in Delft and the Netherlands.
Veere: A Hidden Coastal Gem
Our final stop in the Netherlands, before crossing into Belgium, was the utterly enchanting village of Veere. I can say, without a doubt, that of all the towns and cities we visited throughout the country, Veere was the most delightful hidden gem. The drive to get there was beautiful in itself, winding along the scenic coast. We arrived with little expectation beyond having read numerous recommendations not to miss this charming spot. I am profoundly grateful we heeded those tips, because, truly, WOW.
Stepping into Veere felt like entering a storybook, as if history had magically paused in time. We found ourselves in the most beautiful, magical, and perfectly preserved historic small village. The very first thing that greeted us upon entering the town was the sight of a man expertly crafting homemade stroopwafels. The aroma was utterly irresistible; I honestly don’t know how anyone could possibly walk past without stopping. For the uninitiated, a stroopwafel is a delightful Dutch treat consisting of two thin, crispy waffles with a luscious layer of caramel syrup sandwiched in the middle. We sampled several stroopwafels throughout our trip, but these freshly made ones were, hands down, the absolute best, warm and gooey and bursting with flavor.
The village exuded an atmosphere of pure joy and relaxation. We were surrounded by inviting ice cream parlors, charming small candy shops, and the shimmering waters of the harbor, dotted with boats. Everyone we encountered seemed genuinely happy and at ease. We ambled around, slowly absorbing the quaint beauty of this unique village, almost immediately wishing we had booked a hotel here to extend our stay and fully immerse ourselves. Our delightful stroll eventually led us to an outdoor cafe named ‘T Waepen of Veere, where we stopped for lunch. And once again, the food was absolutely exceptional.
I savored some truly exquisite cheese croquettes, perfectly crispy on the outside and wonderfully gooey within. My brother and father opted for the smoked salmon sandwich, both declaring it to be the best smoked salmon they had ever tasted – high praise indeed! Veere truly felt like a breath of fresh air; a pristine, charming, and undeniably beautiful village situated on an island. It perfectly encapsulated the magic and unique essence of the Netherlands, leaving an indelible mark on our travel memories.
