We learned this firsthand during an interesting conversation with a taxi driver who explained that locals often earn their entire year’s income in a compressed six-month period. A hotel owner echoed this sentiment, highlighting the seasonal nature of the region’s tourism industry.
- The Amalfi Coast becomes incredibly congested during the peak summer months, particularly July and August. Buses filled with hundreds of tourists descend upon town after town, transforming the charming, narrow streets into bustling, sometimes overwhelming, thoroughfares. If you’re seeking a more serene and authentic experience, these months are best avoided.
- We chose to visit at the end of May and early June, a period we found to be absolutely ideal. We used Positano Taxi, and the 95-euro fare for the 1.5-hour journey was absolutely worth every penny. Our vehicle was air-conditioned, spotlessly clean, and spacious. He also provided excellent recommendations for local restaurants and activities, enriching our initial experience. If I were to return, I would undoubtedly choose a private taxi or the ferry once again.

To take a ferry from Naples, you’ll first need to get from the airport to the Naples port (a quick taxi ride). During the summer months, ferry services are frequent and plentiful. We utilized ferries extensively for inter-town travel and for our return journey to the airport, finding tickets to range from a reasonable 9 to 29 euros, depending on the route and provider. When it came to dining out, I initially attempted to make restaurant reservations in advance, but this proved surprisingly challenging from afar. Thankfully, it seems to be a common and delightful custom in Positano for hotels to assist guests with restaurant bookings. This invaluable service meant we were able to secure tables at every single establishment on my carefully curated list. Do keep in mind, for extremely popular or busy venues, you might need to wait a day or two for an opening, so if there’s a particular restaurant you absolutely must experience, making reservations as early as possible (even if through your hotel upon arrival) is advisable.
Our first lunch in Positano took us to Da Vincenzo, a fantastic restaurant highly recommended by our hotel. Situated perfectly, it offered spectacular views of the sparkling sea and the vibrant cascade of Positano’s cliffside homes – the ideal backdrop for our inaugural meal.
We started with a truly incredible fried appetizer trio featuring a crispy rice ball, a delicate fried zucchini flower, and a savory fried ravioli – a dish so delicious I wished I could enjoy it every single day! For my main course, I indulged in a heavenly tomato mozzarella pasta, generously topped with fresh, creamy homemade burrata. Words simply cannot capture the exquisite deliciousness of this dish. My husband opted for a rich caramelized onion beef ragu, which disappeared from his plate so quickly that I can confidently attest to its equally scrumptious flavor.
Our next lunch adventure led us to Da Adolfo, a charming and unique restaurant nestled right on the ocean, accessible only by boat. You can reach this hidden gem either via a private water taxi or by catching the restaurant’s own ferry service from a specific dock in Positano. Having seen this iconic spot featured on numerous travel blogs, I knew it was a must-visit destination for our trip.
At Da Adolfo, we savored an array of exquisitely fresh dishes: mozzarella grilled on fragrant lemon leaves, succulent mussels bathed in a rich marinara sauce, a vibrant fresh mozzarella and tomato spaghetti, and a surprisingly delicious green pepper almond pesto spaghetti. Every bite was a revelation – the flavors were distinct, authentic, and incredibly fresh. Dining literally at the water’s edge was an absolute treat, and the mussels were undoubtedly the freshest I have ever tasted in my life.
Many visitors choose to make Da Adolfo an all-day affair, renting sun loungers by the restaurant to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy drinks. Chairs typically cost around 8 euros to reserve, and advance booking is essential, especially during peak season. We, however, skipped this option as it was a rainy day, and we had plans for a boat ride. Even with the rain, the experience was still fantastic!
For dinner on our second night, we discovered Ristorante Da Constantino, and it was, hands down, the absolute best Italian food we had in Positano. This restaurant delivers authentic, family-made Italian cuisine, and my husband and I still regret not returning for a second meal during our stay! We feasted on delicious homemade gnocchi swimming in a rich tomato sauce, perfectly al dente penne with tomato sauce, a classic mozzarella pizza, and a sublime homemade tiramisu. Every dish was simply perfect, embodying the very essence of the comforting, soulful Italian food we had dreamed of enjoying on our honeymoon.
Adding to its allure, Da Constantino is perched high in the hills of Positano, offering truly spectacular panoramic views of the town and coastline, especially as the lights begin to twinkle at dusk. The restaurant thoughtfully provides a courtesy shuttle service, making the journey to and from this elevated location incredibly convenient and hassle-free.
For lunch on our third day, we ventured to Ristorante Saraceno d’Oro. While reaching it requires a pleasant hike uphill, the journey itself is part of the charm, as you stumble upon many cool, hidden gems along the way. The reward at the top – truly great food – makes every step worthwhile. I must give special commendation to their spaghetti with meat sauce; it was arguably one of the best I have ever tasted! The sausage pizza was also incredibly flavorful and satisfying. We enjoyed our meal outdoors, surrounded by lush trees and fragrant lemon groves, creating a deeply Mediterranean and peaceful dining experience. To top it off, we each received mini bottles of Champagne, just because – a delightful touch!
Our final dinner in Positano was at La Tagliata, a unique family-style restaurant where the menu is non-existent, and you simply pay a set price per person for an abundant feast. While I wouldn’t say I was head-over-heels in love with every single dish, I firmly believe the overall experience made it an absolutely worthwhile visit. The restaurant’s location is breathtakingly high in the hills, creating the sensation of dining in an enchanting Italian treehouse, perched among the clouds with unparalleled views.
La Tagliata offers a multi-course meal, complemented by unlimited wine – yes, you read that correctly, unlimited wine! A crucial piece of advice: pace yourself, as there is an incredible amount of food served throughout the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed sampling a wide variety of cheese, vegetable, and meat dishes, but by the end, I simply couldn’t eat another bite. The meal culminates in a lively, unforgettable musical performance, with staff members passing around instruments and serenading guests. It was truly quite an experience, filled with laughter and traditional Italian cheer. (I even captured a short video of the festive ending, which I’ll share soon!).
Finally, I wholeheartedly recommend enjoying a drink at the Champagne Bar at Le Sirenuse. Why? Because it offers arguably the most spectacular views for a drink in all of Positano. The hotel itself is an iconic landmark, steeped in history, exuding classic Italian glamour and truly amazing elegance. For many, including us, staying at Le Sirenuse might be beyond budget, but numerous people wisely suggest simply visiting for a cocktail to soak in the ambiance and the unparalleled vistas. This is an absolute must-do in Positano. Indeed, most of the area’s magnificent luxury hotels feature their own exquisite restaurants and bars, providing excellent opportunities to experience their grandeur, even if just for a single drink or a memorable meal.
Retail Therapy: Shopping in Positano
Of all the charming towns we explored along the Amalfi Coast, Positano unequivocally offered the most delightful and diverse **shopping** experience. My husband and I were utterly captivated by the array of quaint, local boutiques lining its winding streets. I managed to find a stylish pair of sunglasses (a necessary replacement, as I’d forgotten mine at home!), while my husband discovered unique swimsuits, a beautiful signet ring, and some elegant shoes. Each purchase felt special, a tangible memento of our Italian escape.
A quintessential Positano experience is acquiring custom-made sandals. There are numerous artisanal workshops throughout the town where skilled craftsmen measure your feet and handcraft a pair of bespoke sandals right before your eyes. I absolutely adored mine from La Botteguccia Positano, so much so that I ended up with two pairs! My husband was equally pleased to stumble upon an off-the-beaten-path shop that also offered custom-made sandals for men, a rare find.
The Amalfi Coast is also celebrated for its exquisite hand-painted ceramics. We explored many beautiful ceramic shops in Positano, but ultimately found more favorable prices and a wider selection in Ravello, which I’ll delve into further in my upcoming post on that enchanting town.
One of my most memorable shopping escapades in Positano took place at a truly fascinating antique shop. Tucked away on a charming side street, uphill from the main thoroughfare, it was a treasure trove of eclectic finds. Some items spilled out onto the street, while others were crammed into a tiny, overflowing interior. An elderly gentleman, who seemed to possess a remarkable ability to discern our innermost desires, expertly guided us in selecting a few unique pieces.
See that intriguing “big head” in the left corner of the photo, the one that appears to be in a state of pensive contemplation? We ended up purchasing that very piece! I also had my eye on two majestic lion door stoppers. However, the old shopkeeper steadfastly refused to sell them to us, sagely explaining that they would be far too heavy to carry and prohibitively expensive to ship back to the USA. While his reasoning was sound, and the moment quite amusing, looking back at the photo, I can’t help but wish I’d found a way to acquire them!
Embracing the Sea: Unforgettable Boat Rides in Positano
If I could offer one **final, essential recommendation** for visiting Positano and truly appreciating the Amalfi Coast, it would be this: embark on a boat ride to witness the coastline from the sea. Whether you choose to rent a small boat, take a dedicated tour, or even utilize a boat as a mode of transportation between towns, experiencing the Amalfi Coast from the water is an absolute imperative. It’s the only way to grasp the full, breathtaking grandeur of this iconic landscape, seeing it exactly as it’s meant to be seen.
Initially, the idea of renting a boat seemed daunting and potentially complicated. However, I soon discovered that Positano offers an incredible variety of options for planning boat excursions, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Many hotels, including ours, provide complimentary boat rides for their guests. Additionally, there are numerous boat taxi services and private companies offering guided tours. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the prices for these experiences were far more reasonable and affordable than we had anticipated, dispelling any initial concerns about cost.
Our boat trip included plenty of opportunities for exhilarating cliff jumping, a highlight for my adventurous husband. He seemed determined to leap from every possible rock formation! (We had a rather amusing moment when he unwittingly chose a spot where a woman was sunbathing topless for one of his jumps; he truly didn’t realize until he was already up there, much to our shared, slightly embarrassed, laughter!).
We embarked on a memorable four-hour boat tour that took us well beyond the town of Amalfi. On our return journey, we unexpectedly found ourselves caught in a sudden storm – an experience that was a mix of humor and slight discomfort, as we were thoroughly soaked by icy rain. However, the moment we returned to Positano, the storm had passed, revealing this:
Even in the aftermath of a downpour, Positano retains its inherent romance and captivating beauty! As you can undoubtedly tell, my love for Positano runs deep. I found it to be incredibly romantic, striking a perfect balance between the renowned glamour of the Amalfi Coast and a welcoming, personable charm that made us feel right at home.
During my research, I had read complaints from some travelers about the numerous hills and the physical exertion required to navigate Positano. However, my husband and I were not bothered by this in the slightest. In fact, we thoroughly enjoyed the daily “workout” of climbing hills, finding it a welcome counterpoint to indulging in delicious pizzas and creamy gelato. It’s an important consideration, though, for those who may have mobility issues or prefer to avoid extensive uphill walking.
