Our stay at Hotel Le Chateau de Pierre was truly delightful. Its location was absolutely perfect, nestled just behind Château Frontenac on a quiet street lined with elegant grey stone buildings. During my visits, I indulged in a perfect caramel cheesecake and a refreshing iced tea. On another occasion, I savored a maple syrup latte, a unique and incredibly delightful treat that I couldn’t resist trying more than once. Maison Smith perfectly embodies the sweet spirit of Quebec.

If you’re in the mood for a European bistro experience, make your way to Cochon Dangue. While Old Quebec’s beauty is undeniable, I highly recommend venturing beyond its ancient walls to fully appreciate the city’s diverse offerings and to experience the unique perspective of its outer fortifications.

Our explorations took us on a delightful expedition to Champagne Le Maître Confiseur, a renowned chocolate shop we discovered in our travel guide. Located in the Saint-Roch area, a mere 15-minute walk from Old Quebec, this excursion offered a glimpse into a different, more contemporary side of the city. I highly recommend their delicious chocolate-covered cherry chocolate – a true indulgence.

A Breakfast to Remember at Cafe Le Hobbit

Downtown Quebec City also treated us to the best breakfast of our entire trip at Cafe Le Hobbit, conveniently located about a 10-15 minute walk from Old Quebec. I also ordered a side of crispy, flavorful sausage that brought back fond memories of Irish breakfast sausages – rich without being overly fatty. My husband happily devoured his full breakfast, which included eggs, bacon, a fresh baguette, hash browns, and baked beans, a testament to the satisfying portions and delicious flavors.

Directly across the street from Cafe Le Hobbit lies Épicerie J.A. Moisan, North America’s oldest grocery store, established in 1871. This place is, quite simply, my idea of heaven. Their website accurately describes it as “a fine gourmet food store and a real Ali Baba’s cave,” offering “quality products from around the world as well as authentic local products.” It is a beautifully preserved old-style store, where every aisle is an adventure. As I perused the incredible selection, I couldn’t help but wish I could simply move in.

This incredible creation is essentially maple syrup that has been heated and then whipped while cooling, resulting in a thick, caramel-like consistency that tastes like exquisite maple fudge. Yet, it’s made solely from maple syrup, making it a pure, delicious, and surprisingly wholesome treat. And yes, it’s Paleo-friendly, so theoretically, one could enjoy it every day!

The flavors evoked a festive, comforting feeling, and upon later research, it made perfect sense – a savory minced meat pie seasoned with warm spices.

The burgers at Chic Shack were surprisingly delicious and of high quality, and their fresh fruit sodas were a unique and refreshing touch. It was the perfect spot for a satisfying late-night meal.

Our very last culinary stop was another burger joint, Chez Victor. Recommended by our B&B host, this gourmet burger restaurant is renowned for its extensive selection of both meat and non-meat burger options. We chose it for our final lunch and were incredibly pleased with the decision. I ordered the duck confit burger and was absolutely blown away by its rich, savory flavors. Unfortunately, I couldn’t try their fries due to a peanut allergy, as they are cooked in peanut oil. However, they offered me a side Caesar salad instead, which turned out to be one of the best Caesar salads I’ve ever had. Do yourself a favor and visit Chez Victor!

Aren’t these flowers simply breathtaking? And the city’s parks are equally stunning! I often found myself asking, “Is this real life?” The sheer abundance and beauty of the flora made me dream of buying a secluded house surrounded by woods and planting countless flowers, then enjoying every meal al fresco amidst their splendor. A girl can certainly dream!

Speaking of parks, Parc du Bastion-de-la-Reine is an absolute must-visit. With its unique windmill-like structures (apologies for the less-than-eloquent description!), the park itself is simply beautiful. Quebec City seems to be generously adorned with greenery and parks, and taking the time to enjoy nature in this way was incredibly refreshing and grounding.
